LAS BANDERAS DE MENDIETA

Remembering. Resurrecting. Revisualizing.

“My art is grounded in the belief of one universal energy which runs through everything: from insect to man, from man to spectre, from spectre to plant from plant to galaxy. My works are the irrigation veins of this universal fluid. Through them ascend the ancestral sap, the original beliefs, the primordial accumulations, the unconscious thoughts that animate the world.”  -Ana Mendieta.

‘Las Banderas de Mendieta’ were conceived from the concept of merging Ana Mendieta's work with mine and seeing how her ideas and my photo-based process can collaborate and procreate.

Often, when people think of Ana Mendieta, it is usually her performance work that comes to mind and the documentation of those performances. I am interested in her carvings and the inspiration she channeled from spending time in caves or the desert making her work. During her brief time on earth, Ana created her own visual language which consisted of symbols, whom were inspired by the land and its history. I am using those symbols here on these cyanotype flags.

As a photographer, I am curious about Ana the photographer. I asked myself, “how would Ana Mendieta use the cyanotype process? How would she display the work?".  From that thought was born the work I have been making for the past several months, and during my time in residence with Transborder Art on Governors Island. Sites were very important to Ana, and keeping that in mind, I wanted to take a piece of nature and include it in the presentation of the work. Similarly to Ana's performances, which mostly took place outdoors, I wanted these flags with her symbols to exist outdoors. These flags were created as an homage to Ana Mendieta and also as a way to illuminate her important work and remember how important her contributions were to the art world and feminist art.
